Creation of a Reborn Baby Doll

Making a nice reborn baby doll requires complete mastery and experience from the craftsman. Actually, reborning can be considered an art, on a par with painting and sculpture, as it is able to animate lifeless objects. Nevertheless, apart from great skills, producing such dolls implies various expensive materials being involved.

Thus, to breathe life into inanimate silicon or vinyl parts, the doll artist uses: cloth body (usually it is pre-manufactured, but some craftsmen prefer to make the doll's body by themselves); paint brushes (hemostats and a piece of cloth are the most common objects for painting the inside of each part); paint or dye for coloring (basically artists use either oil paint or acrylic dye); wig or hair (here viscose, mohair, synthetic or human hair are used); polyfill; glue; plastic pellets (meant to weight the baby doll's butt); plastic ties (strong cords which fasten the limbs to the body); and glass eyes (come in different colors and sizes); as well as gel, sand, kitty litter, rice or beans to fill the reborn's limbs.

Reborning is a difficult process which involves many sophisticated techniques and time-consuming procedures. First the doll taken from the factory is disassembled, washed and dried. After that the doll artist carefully paints it with the help of special brushes and paint/dye. Using rooting tools hair and eyelashes are applied, and then the existing pre-manufactured body is replaced with a stuffed and weighed one. Further enhancements may imply gloss sealer for nails, a battery ensuring the breathing effect etc. Once the decorating is complete, the doll is assembled and dressed.
